Choose a backup system by how you will recover, including when WordPress admin is unavailable. A large list of storage integrations means little if you cannot retrieve or restore the copy.
Check what the host already provides
Ask what files and database tables are included, how often copies are taken, how long they are kept, and whether restoration is available outside WordPress. Confirm whether backups survive cancellation or an account incident. Downloadability and separate storage are useful requirements.
Core's content export is not a complete files-and-database backup. A hosting backup may be enough for a simple site if you have verified its coverage and recovery, though an independent copy provides another path.
Define the requirements before choosing
| Requirement | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Data loss | How many recent posts, orders or submissions could you lose? |
| Storage | Can you recover if the web server and its local backup folder are unavailable? |
| Restoration | Can the host or tool restore without a working admin screen? |
| Coverage | Are uploads, database, themes, plugins and relevant configuration included? |
| Retention | Is there a clean older copy if a problem went unnoticed? |
| Access | Who owns the storage account and can obtain the files in an emergency? |
For ecommerce, a nightly database backup can leave a day of orders outside the recovery point. Decide whether the host's higher-frequency recovery or a different architecture is required. A generic plugin recommendation cannot resolve that business decision.
One documented option: UpdraftPlus
UpdraftPlus documents scheduled backups, restoration and remote storage in its free plugin. Listed destinations include Google Drive, Dropbox and S3-compatible storage. Its listing identifies David Anderson / Team Updraft as the developer.
The paid edition documents additional destinations and features such as incremental backups and automatic backups before updates. Check the current edition comparison for the feature you need; do not assume screenshots showing premium controls describe the free package.
This makes it an option to evaluate when you want plugin-managed backups and supported storage you control. It is not a guarantee that a particular server can complete a large backup within its limits. Check job logs and carry out a restore drill.
Consider complexity and lock-in
A plugin needs credentials for remote storage, sufficient disk or processing capacity, and a reliable schedule. Establish how the archive can be restored if the plugin itself stops loading. Retain its restoration instructions with the backup.
Host snapshots may be easier to restore through a dashboard but tied to that host's account. Plugin archives may be portable but require more owner-managed storage and setup. Keep a usable export when changing providers.
Privacy and the first verification
Backups can contain account records, form entries, personal data and secrets from configuration files. Limit storage access and choose retention intentionally. Review the storage provider's location and terms where those affect your obligations.
Create a fresh backup, inspect its log, confirm the remote copy and restore onto an isolated test site. Compare the restored content and important flows. Our backup tutorial gives the verification sequence.
